Remote Control Lawnmower

Just wrapped this up and delivered to it’s new owner. It has just about everything except for autopilot! I’ll post some followups with the details, for now here are the specs:

  • Craftsman M270 21″ mower
  • 24v wheelchair motors and batteries
  • 24v alternator (never run out of juice, only run out of gas!)
  • Electric start – remote controlled of course
  • Dimension Engineering Sabertooth 2×32 motor controller
  • FPV camera for mowing at a distance

This is also posted on instructables here: https://www.instructables.com/id/Remote-Control-Lawn-Mower/

  1. im trying to build a bigger remote im trying to figure out how to wire a throttle control into the nano board briggs and stratton makes a electric throttle for the salt spreaders im learning as i go

    1. I had no idea they had an electric throttle, neat! Googling it looks like there are only two wires from it, so my guess is it’s just a DC motor, not even a servo. It is probably controlled by reversing the polarity and applying a voltage.

I’m using a circuit like this on my remote control wheelbarrow to control the dump actuators which is basically the same idea: https://quasarelectronics.co.uk/media/ecom/images/reversible-dc-motor-using-2-relays.gif

It looks like in the spreader application you get a momentary rocker switch – the throttle opens or closes while you hold it down, and when you release it just stays wherever it is. With the arduino, you might want to use a momentary switch on your RC controller to do the same thing – otherwise it could be hard to control with a normal throttle joystick I imagine.
